Mindful Monday, June 5, 2016

As we dig deeper into global citizenship, we considered the following images during Social Studies today.

Mrs. Steckly was biking on the weekend and came across this art installation on St. Patrick's Island in East Village. We had been here before, and some us recognized this hill from our field trip.

We recorded our observations, inferences and wonders about this image, and then answered the question  "if the poles were humans, what would the web or yarn represent?".

After some individual and group reflection and discussion, here were our answers:
(at this point we knew the poles had some sort of messages on them)

Khushi – connection between them and their feelings for each other and relationship

Adam – people knitting

Kian – connection, maybe the bond of team

Suleman – vibrations to each other, strings connections

Rayme – a symbol of friendship because everyone would be holding it

Manar – harmony of the community

Zahed – their thoughts

Peyton – a heart, because everyone has heart, to be kind and nice

Asia – love or friendship

Giovanna – friendship

Alvin – people of global citizens

Owen – parachute

Ivana – friendship or freedom, nature or family

Darya – relationships and love

Alice – Parachute

Zahra – spider web

Logan – holding hands

Cairo – connections and difference

Alyssa -  the names of people who died

Braeden – connection between the people and their relationship

Noah –  friendship and connections

We are learning as we observe and infer, there are no wrong answers. Each of our own interpretations reflect what we know and can help others view things from a different perspective.

We then read what some of the poles said:

We then learned the #unityproject was set up on the weekend for students to take string and wrap around 5 poles that they identify with. "Participants wind colourful yarn around posts that reflect their identities. Their yarn intertwines with others’ to create a web of interconnectedness."

This week we will continue to explore this idea of global thinking and use the Unity Project to as inspiration for our own web of connections.
