Water Walk Day Wednesday, March 22, 2017

Today is International Water Day. Learn more here

We joined up with the other two classes. Our challenge was to design a water filter using our background knowledge of rock and minerals...

Did you know that people have to walk 5 km a day just to get clean water? Today we took a walk, carried water and recorded our observations/inferences/wonders.

Happy Spring Break!

Over the break please read, read, read! Also practice your multiplication on IXL :)

Each student received a name to make an "Unbirthday Card" for over the break (we ran out of time today!). It should read"Happy Unbirthday".

We will see everyone back at school on Monday, April 3!

Tomorrow!

1. Tomorrow we will be celebrating our school unbirthday. This idea comes from Alice in Wonderland. Because not all students have the chance to celebrate their birthday during the school year, we have decided to celebrate EVERYONE's birthday together! We will enjoy exchanging some cards, and students may eat one special snack that you may send with them.

2. We also will be having a Pizza Party at lunch! Our class won the Big Box of Cards Fundraiser (we sold the most!). Each student in our class will receive 2 pieces of pizza and a juice box. Please send additional snacks with your child for morning snack/lunch time.

3. Our International Water Day Walk is tomorrow! See below for the route we will be taking after lunch.

Reminder: No school Thursday or Friday

Today we learned that Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Please continue working on multiplication on IXL Math :)

Reminder: We are starting in-line skating tomorrow! Please bring your helmet and make sure you have a pair of dry socks. Alien In-line Skating will gladly provide a helmet for you if you aren't able to bring yours/have one.

Math Practice Question...

Today in math we worked on multiplication number sentences

 -writing them
-saying them
-drawing them
- showing the skip counting...

For example...

At home practice questions...  (showing all the steps above!)

5x2=

3x2=

4x4 =

Ask your child - Which way to rows travel? Which ways to columns travel?

Today we had the chance to share our found arrays. Thank you to those students who brought in their found examples.

Here are two links you can use to practice arrays at home:

Frosty Friday, March 10, 2017

Today we learned about arrays! This is another multiplication strategy.

An array - rows with equal number in each...

5x5 = 25    (5 rows and 5 columns)

4x3=12 (4 rows and 3 columns)

Math Homework: Find a real-life example of an array and bring it into class on Monday or have your parents email a picture to Mrs. Steckly rmsteckly@cbe.ab.ca

Here are a few examples below - can you challenge yourself and find one in your house? At the grocery store? Where are you going this weekend and what are you doing? You will be surprised that arrays are everywhere!

What's happening in math...

Today in room 154 we worked on our bar graph skills. Together as a class we have been collecting data on who eats a fruit or vegetable during our morning snack or lunch time. Each of us made our own bar graph to record this information. A total for 95 fruits and 60 vegetables were consumed over the last few weeks.

We also had the opportunity to practice our skip counting (the first Multiplication Strategy we are learning) in both practice and word problems. Ask your child to show how they solved the following question...and to write the number sentence! ____x____= _____

We have been reading great stories around multiplication. Today we read "One Hundred Hungry Ants" by Elinor J. Pinczes

This leads nicely into our next multiplication strategy arrays! Tomorrow students will be asked to find a real life example of an array (an artifact...whether object or a picture of) over the weekend and bring it on Monday.

Today all grade 3 classes came together to explore 6 word stories.

6 word stories?! Check out this link to view the examples we saw in class.

They are powerful way to describe something (in our case rocks) using effective and picture-creating verbs. We had the chance to work with new friends from the other classes and will continue to build on collaborative thinking and processes :)

Please continue to use Math IXL for basic facts, word problems and challenges as we deepen our number sense this comes into play with everything we consider in math.

Yesterday was Compliment Day! We selected a classmate's name out of a basket and later in the day had to share and receive compliments. Everyone agreed this is a great community building activity, but this can also happen spontaneously! Some of us shared our reflections in a recorded video - we will soon put this together and watch it as a class :)

In writing...

We are creating our own super hero based on verbs and and alliterations. Ask your child - does your super hero have a name? Super power? Disguise?
