Truthful Tuesday, February 28, 2017

We have travelled to Peru! (well, not quiet)

In Social Studies we have been observing and inferring, wondering, discussing...

Today we were able categorize our observations into these subtopics...

History    Culture    Architecture   Transportation    Landforms   Location  Wildlife

In math we continue to learn about 3 digit addition and subtraction and practicing our skills in carrying over and borrowing.

What's happening in math...

We have been busy "buying and selling". Ask your child what this means and how much money they have to spend. :)

We have been tracking our healthy snacks through the use of a simple and collaborative graphing exercise. There are a few details we need to add to this and will be doing so next week.

Please continue to read and practice your basic math facts! We will be wrapping up addition and subtraction and moving onto multiplication and division. Practicing your skip counting is also a great idea, too!

Wondering Wednesday, February 22

In grade 3 we have been discussing feedback and assessment.

What does this mean? What does it look like? What can I improve on? Did I try my best? Am I proud of this work? What am I aiming for? Am I making good use of class time?

Ask your child about Austin's Butterfly!
Watch the video here

This is the language we will continue to use...and we will add more descriptors for 4-3-2-1.

Yesterday we considered what is feedback and why it's important. We also discussed self-assessment as we want to understand ourselves as learners.

We also know that receiving peer/friend feedback is also a great way to learn.
The feed back must be kind, specific and useful.

The students also had the opportunity to self-assess our International Organization Informational Posters. We understand that we are lifelong learners and learning is journey (it never stops!). With the feedback from ourselves, peers and teacher we then grow and improve our work.

Today we talked about a new word: ENHANCE

Ask your child, what is one way they can enhance their informational poster.

Wondering Wednesday, February 15, 2017

We have been working on our informational poster! It is due Tuesday, February 21, 2017. We know that means we have 5 full days to work on it, because (reminder!) no school on Thursday, Friday (Teacher's Convention) and Monday (Family Day).

Here is the criteria for the poster:

1. The Organization's Name

2. The Organization's Logo

3. Sentences on who they are and what they do

4. At least one example of how the organization has shown empathy

5. Pictures! Details! Colour! That make sense and relate to the organization

Please use the criteria as a checklist. Ask yourself what am I missing? Can I add more detail?

Here is an example...

If you're looking for more information and specific examples please use these websites and videos to learn more! Remember you must have at least one example of how your organization has helped others and shown empathy!

Mindful Monday, February 13, 2017

Today we started our research on World Organizations who support people in need. We (each student) have selected one of the following organizations to learn about:

- Red Cross
- Unesco
- UNICEF
- Doctors Without Borders
- Free the Children

We are looking to answer : WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, and examples of the organization's work. Some starting points/websites have been posted on BrightSpace CBE (which you can access through your computer at home!)

With the information we find, we will then be creating an informational poster. This will be due on Tuesday, February 21. We will be given a lot of class time to complete this, and if it is unfinished by Wednesday afternoon, it will then become homework :)

Happy Mindful Monday!

Reminder: For our Valentine's celebration tomorrow, students may pass out Valentine's Day Cards (no chocolate or candy please!). There are 23 students in our class, and if you wish to include first names you can find them on RazKids! (hey! do some reading while you're there too!).

Thinking Tuesday, February 7, 2016

Update! A reminder our Grand Opening Ceremony is on Friday, February 10 at 1pm. If you are able to attend, please note there are a limited amount of seats. Please contact the office for ticket reservations.

Today during math we worked on an open ended question.

This is for homework, and due tomorrow!

Our math needs to have a number sentence, word sentence (and pictures/drawing are optional). Below is the question we are working on (some people have a different dollar amount to work on).

An example answer/what your work should look like is:

1)  5+5=10

Mr. Dyck could buy 2 oranges at $5 each to spend $10 total.

 = 10

We know we need to have at least 5 different answers, but want to challenge ourselves to think of more! (how many can you think of?)

Important: Show your work and thinking. Ask yourself: where is the evidence?

:) Enjoy!

Mindful Monday, February 6, 2017

Happy Monday Everyone!

Today we took the time to observe and work on a Science Journal Entry on Rocks and Minerals. We know this is due tomorrow :)

If you took home your watercolour paper and turtle drawing, please add in the shapes (1-14). Drawing only! Please do not colour in or paint these.

As we prepare for the Opening Ceremony (it's this Friday!) our school recorded a lip dub to the song "Will I am". Ask me (your child) what their part was!

Stay warm :)

Freezing Friday, February 3, 2017

Thank you to the students and families that came in over the last few days for Student-Led Conferences. We are proud of your work, growth and goals.

Please take the weekend to enjoy your family, and continue reading on RazKids and practicing IXL Math.

Also....here is What's Due!

Important Notes

- As we move forward and work on efficiency, students will be expected to take their unfinished work home.

- Spelling Tests will be bi-weekly. We did not get to our test on Thursday this week, so look forward to having that the week of Feb 6-10. The program we use is based on vowel patterns and students have plenty of time in class to use these works in a variety of ways (ex. speaking, writing, in sentences, making their own corrections). The words are not expected to be memorized at home, but rather if you wish to, may practice them for our tests.
